City of the Kings: Lima
Lima, the capital of Peru, was founded by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535 for its strategic location at the centre of the Peruvian coast and the South American coast in general. Lima very quickly became the most important city in the Americas, a centre of power and wealth which were the results of the commercial and cultural activities of the viceroyalty.
It is known as the “City of Kings” for the quality of its monumental architecture which can be best appreciated today by visiting its baroque and renaissance churches, mansions and colonial palaces, as well as its universities and archbishop’s palace. The city’s innovative culinary tradition is ranked among the finest in the world; Lima has been declared the Gastronomic Capital of Latin America.
In a guided tour of the historic center of Lima, we visit the Paseo de la Republica, San Martin square, Plaza Mayor with their different buildings, The Goverment Palace, the Cathedral, Main Square, The Archbishop's Palace, the monumental San Francisco convent, the catacombs and the religious museum, which has the largest exhibition of colonial art in South America and the main streets where colonial mansions are located.
On our way to the modern area of the city, we will cross the exclusive district of San Isidro, the new financial heart of the city, to take a look at pre-inca Huaca Huallamarca. Lima, as a cosmopolitan city, offers many archaeological and natural attractions, excellent historical museums and art galleries, theatrical presentations and cultural exhibitions, modern shopping malls, and a variety of restaurants and bars where one can enjoy both local and international food and drinks.
